Chakrata is a quiet cantonment town in Uttarakhand, located at 7,000 ft, just 320 km from Delhi. Unlike Mussoorie or Shimla, Chakrata is still offbeat, clean and less crowded because it is under Army (Special Frontier Force). Chakrata is an Army Cantonment Area - carry your original Aadhar Card / valid Govt ID, it is checked at the Chakrata checkpost and again at the Kanasar gate for Budher Caves entry. Smoking and drinking inside the vehicle is strictly prohibited.

Expedition Schedule

Reach Dehradun around 6 AM and drive to Chakrata (90 km), checking into the resort by 8 AM.

After breakfast, the whole group heads to Lokhandi and starts the trek to Moila Top, enjoying a 360° view of the Himalayas and the unseen beauty of the Bugyal in the dark deodar forest, along with the Budher / Moila Caves.

After completing the trek, the group hikes to Chilmiri Top for a beautiful sunset - the whole valley turns orange as the Himalayan range glows.

The group returns to the resort for dinner with a bonfire and music.

To complete this climb comfortably, you should maintain a baseline cardiovascular health. We recommend starting running/jogging routines 4 weeks before the trip (aiming for 5 km in 35-40 minutes).

Individuals with severe asthma, cardiac history, or chronic knee problems must consult their physician before registering.

Chakrata - The Hidden Himalayan Gem Near Delhi | Complete Travel Guide

Just 320 km from Delhi, this small cantonment town in Uttarakhand is still untouched, raw, and surrounded by dense deodar forests, misty mountains and two of Uttarakhand's most beautiful treks - Moila Top and Tiger Falls.

If you are tired of crowded Mussoorie and looking for a peaceful, offbeat weekend getaway near Delhi, Chakrata is the answer.

Unlike other hill stations, Chakrata is a Restricted Army Cantonment Area. That is the reason you won't find too many hotels, market crowd or traffic here. This is exactly what makes it special - clean air, no pollution, and pure nature.

Moila Top Trek & Budher Caves

The main highlight of Chakrata. A 2.5 km easy trek from Lokhandi through dark deodar forest takes you to a wide green meadow - Moila Danda or Bugyal. From here you get a 360° view of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch and other Himalayan peaks.

Inside the forest is the famous Budher Caves (Miola Caves) - a 150 metre long limestone cave with hanging stalactites. It feels like you are inside an ancient era.

Tiger Falls (312 FT)

Located 20 km from Chakrata, it is one of the highest direct waterfalls in India. Water falls straight from a height of 312 feet into a small natural pool.

The trek to the base is just 1 km downhill through thick forest. You can sit at the bottom, dip your feet, and listen to the roar of the fall - completely healing.

Chilmiri Neck

The highest point of Chakrata (7,500 ft), under Army control. From here, sunset looks magical - the whole valley turns orange and the Himalayan range glows.

Photography is restricted here due to the Army area, but the view remains in your memory forever.

Best Time to Visit

March to June is best for trekking and clear Himalayan views, with temperatures of 10-25°C. July to September is monsoon, with the waterfall at its peak and lush green forest, but the trek becomes slippery.

October to November is best for clear skies and sunset views, while December to February brings a snowfall season that turns Chakrata white - perfect for snow lovers.

Things to Remember

Carry your Aadhar Card - it is checked at the Cantonment gate. Drones are not allowed and no permit is needed. Carry cash, as ATMs are limited, and avoid loud music at the waterfall.
