Kanatal: The Quiet Himalayan Escape That Mussoorie Forgot to Keep

⏱️ 6 min readJust 38 km ahead of crowded Mussoorie, at an altitude of 8,500 ft, lies Kanatal — a tiny hamlet in Tehri Garhwal that is still untouched. No mall road, no traffic jam, no honking — only pine forests, apple orchards, snow-capped peaks and silence that you can actually hear.
Located on the Chamba-Mussoorie road, Kanatal is surrounded by dense oak and deodar forests with open views of Bandarpoonch, Srikantha and Jaonli peaks. On a clear winter morning, you can see the entire Garhwal Himalayan range turning golden from your tent itself.
Not just a hill station, an experience
Kanatal was almost unknown a few years ago, which is its biggest blessing. It is not a typical sightseeing place where you run from one point to another — it is a place where you slow down.
Morning starts with a Himalayan sunrise and birds chirping inside Kaudia Forest, a 5 km stretch of pristine pine forest famous for nature walks and bird watching. In the afternoon, a 5 km drive to Kaddukhal is followed by a 2 km trek or a 5-minute ropeway ride to Surkanda Devi Temple at 9,000 ft — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India, with a 360-degree view no camera can capture: the Dehradun valley on one side, snow peaks on the other, clouds below your feet.
By evening, Dhanaulti Eco Park (13 km away) offers manicured deodar trails, and as the sun sets, the campsite in Kanatal lights up with a bonfire, light music, snacks and stories under a sky full of stars you never see in cities.
The adventure capital near Dehradun
What makes Kanatal different from any other quiet hill station is adventure — it is called the adventure hub of Uttarakhand near Dehradun.
Every camp here offers zip-lining over valleys (400 m long), valley crossing, sky cycling, rock climbing, rappelling and Burma bridges. Kids, couples and corporate groups all find something thrilling, run safely with trained instructors.
Just 35-40 km away is Tehri Lake, one of Asia's largest dams. Where else can you trek in the Himalayas in the morning and go jet skiing, banana boating and paramotoring on the same trip? The Kanatal-to-Tehri combination makes it the only hill station plus lake adventure circuit near Dehradun.
Every season has a different colour
Kanatal is open 365 days and never disappoints. Summer (March-June) is pleasant at 15-25°C, best for camping, adventure and forest walks. Monsoon (July-September) turns it into a green paradise with misty forests. Autumn (September-November) gives crystal-clear Himalayan views. And winter (December-February) turns Kanatal into a mini Kashmir with 3-4 feet of snow — snow camping, a snow trek to Surkanda and snowball fights make it the nearest snow destination from Delhi you can drive to.
More than just a weekend
Kanatal is not for those who want shopping and nightlife — it is for those who want to pause. Whether you are a couple looking for a romantic stay away from the Mussoorie crowd, a family looking for a safe adventure getaway for kids, or a group of friends on a 1 night / 2 days adventure trip from Dehradun, Kanatal is that one place where you can sit idle in front of a pine forest and still feel you have done everything.
Sometimes the best travel plan is to do nothing in the mountains. Kanatal lets you do exactly that.
